SUMMER SERIES: House Guests – Off Kilter / In Time
COOP Gallery is pleased to present a series of exhibitions entitled House Guests. Running through the end of summer, COOP has asked four different curators or curatorial teams from around the region to take over our new space in the Wedgewood Houston neighborhood. For the third show, COOP has invited The Fuel And Lumber Company, from Birmingham, Alabama. See their press release below:

Off Kilter / In Time

The Fuel And Lumber Company presents Off Kilter / In Time, a two-person exhibition with works by April Bachtel and Mary Laube. April Bachtel’s sculptures are made from second-hand artifacts that she dismantles and reassembles with both a violent and tender hand. In contrast to Bachtel’s rough-hewn objects, Mary Laube’s austere paintings of imagined, flattened worlds are at once familiar but removed from a reality directly perceived. Bachtel’s assembly of fragmented parts and Laube’s sharply cropped scenes distort our perspective
More about the artists:
April Bachtel grew up in the home of an artisan furniture maker near Akron, Ohio where she was born. She received a BA in Art Education and a BFA in Painting from Kent State University in 2011. In 2014, she received her MFA in Studio Art from University of Tennessee. She has also studied at Oxbow School of Art and Artist Residency. This summer she is completing a residency at Columbus State University in Columbus, GA. Her work has been exhibited at Roane State Community College in Harriman, TN; Des Lee Gallery in St. Louis, MO; Tahoe Gallery in Incline Village, NV; White Box Gallery in New York, NY; Co-prosperity Sphere Gallery in Chicago, IL; and at Shift Space in Wichita, KS amongst others.
Mary Laube was born in Seoul, South Korea. She received an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa in 2012. Recent exhibitions include Signaling to the Cipher towards a Segway at Field Projects in New York City, Paper Planes at Whitdel Arts in Detroit, 9/50 Summit with Good Weather at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, and Dream Continuum at Circuit 12 in Dallas. Her work has been supported by several artist residencies including the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and the Vermont Studio Center. She received the Illinois National Women in the Arts Award in 2009 and a Project Grant from the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts in 2014. Laube is co-founder of the Warp Whistle Project, a collaborative duo with composer Paul Schuette. Their work was presented at the 2016 International Symposium on Electronic Art in Hong Kong. Recent exhibitions include shows at the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in Gimpo, South Korea and Phyllis Weston in Cincinnati. In addition to her studio practice, Laube has taught at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga and the University of Iowa, and has served as a visiting artist at various institutions including the Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar, Eastern Michigan University, Knox College, and the University of Northern Iowa.

The Fuel And Lumber Company was founded by Amy Pleasant and Pete Schulte in the Summer of 2013 to facilitate a variety of exhibitions and related projects, including solo shows by Jay Davis (Brooklyn, NY) and Jiha Moon (Atlanta, GA) as well as the group exhibition Hither and Yon which included artists Craig Drennen, Jane Fox Hipple, Astri Snodgrass and Jered Sprecher.
Amy Pleasant received a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from The Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA. She has held solo exhibitions at Jeff Bailey Gallery, NY, whitespace gallery, Atlanta, GA, Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, The Birmingham Museum of Art, Atlanta Contemporary, CANDYLAND, Stockholm, Sweden, The Packing Plant, Nashville, The University of Alabama at Birmingham and Auburn University’s School of Liberal Arts. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at venues such as The Knoxville Museum of Art, The Hunter Museum of American Art, The Weatherspoon Museum of Art, The Columbus Museum of Art, The National Museum for Women in the Arts, The Mobile Museum of Art, The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, The Huntsville Museum of Art, Clifford Chance, and The U.S. Embassy, Prague, Czech Republic.
Pleasant’s work has been reviewed in publications such as Sculpture Magazine, Art in America, The Brooklyn Rail, Art Papers, The Commercial Appeal, Burnaway and artforum.com. She is represented by Jeff Bailey Gallery, Hudson, New York and whitespace gallery, Atlanta, Georgia.
Pete Schulte was born and raised in a country called the Midwest. He received an MFA from The University of Iowa in 2008. Drawing is the cornerstone of a practice, which includes the integration of sculpture, site-specific, and curatorial activities. Recent exhibitions include Abstraction Today at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Georgia, Build A Fire at whitespace in Atlanta, Drawings and Paintings with John Dilg at Jeff Bailey Gallery in Hudson, New York, Between Moth And Flame at whitespec in Atlanta, A Letter Edged In Black at The Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Pardon up Here at Luise Ross Gallery in New York. His work has been included in recent group exhibitions at Look&Listen in Saint-Chamas, France and in Simplest Means at Jeff Bailey Gallery in New York. He has been awarded residencies at Yaddo, The Hambidge Center, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Atlantic Center For Art and Threewalls. Art in America, Burnaway, and The New Art Examiner have reviewed his work, among others. Pete Schulte lives and works in Tuscaloosa, where he teaches at The University of Alabama. He will have a solo exhibition at Jeff Bailey Gallery in September 2016.
