New Members: Alex Lockwood, Jonathan Rattner, and Karen Seapker – January 2014

Alex Lockwood makes abstract sculpture from colorful material, often repurposed or recycled. He builds with one primary component which is repeated many times to create patterns and structures. Alex Lockwood is a self-taught artist from Seattle, WA. He has exhibited in various group shows across the US. Alex had his first solo show at Curtis Steiner Gallery in Seattle in 2013.

Jonathan Rattner is a lens-based artist who primarily produces experimental nonfiction film and videos. In his work he employs a mixture of documentary and lyrical filmic elements. By doing so, he strives to offer an alternative, open, and elastic aesthetic experience. Rattner has exhibited work in festivals and galleries in the United States, Europe, and South America. Rattner received MFA’s in Film Production and in Intermedia Art from the University of Iowa. Currently, he holds the position of Assistant Director/Assistant Professor of Film Studies and Assistant Professor of Art at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Karen Seapker’s recent paintings have focused on and questioned ideas of re-birth and renewal, both genuine and misguided. These paintings pay particular concentration on water, its cyclical and symbolic nature, and ideas surrounding baptisms and also drownings. Karen Seapker received her MFA in 2009 from Hunter College in New York, NY. She has exhibited her work in various group shows in various cities including New York, London, and Shanghai. She participated in the Pittsburgh Biennial at The Andy Warhol Museum. She currently has work up in a solo exhibition at Canal Projects in London.
